Facebook has tuned into the need for the news industry to make changes and advancements as far as user integration and socially accessible sites. In an unlikely partnership, Facebook Connect has matched itself with Liberal news outlet, The Huffington Post for HuffPost Social News.

The new site aggregates stories that a particular visitor read or commented on. The application shares this information through a participant’s Facebook profile so that friends and family can see their recommendations for stories in their profile. The new site will also allow Facebook to collect data acquired through a visitors use including habits and content that is interacted with because of sharing. While this might seem aggressive to some visitors the platform does provide an option to turn off auto posting to Facebook.

“Our goal is to make HuffPost Social News the go-to place for Facebook users to share news–both the stories they love and the stories they hate–with friends,” Eric Hippeau, Huffington Post’s new CEO, said in a release. “It should also appeal to marketers interested in reaching passionate, savvy readers who care about the news and who want to share their interests with friends.”

This partnership is somewhat unusual as Facebook does not generally take on third party sites. As well, The Huffington Post has been criticized for its use of bloggers, which many feel relies too heavily on third party content that is unpaid for.

In any case, Facebook has approved the partnership and is likely excited by the prospect that this new venture may afford them, as many online news sites are trying to gain readership in innovative ways to attract readers. “The Huffington Post has led a revolution in how people discover and consume news,” Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg said in a release. “With the integration of Facebook Connect, HuffPost Social News is now leading the way to make news even more of a social experience, giving people new ways to share and filter news and current events through their networks of friends on Facebook.”
