If traveling has ever prevented you from letting your friends and family know what you are doing via Twitter updates or Facebook status, Lufthansa has just rolled out an online tool designed to allow air travelers to share their journey’s while on route.
The new application called MySkyStatus would take a participants flight information, including their departure and arrival data and match it to the Lufthansa feed of airline traffic. The concept would result in automated tweets and status messages when you take off or land, and while your mid-route if you wish.
An upcoming ad campaign will promote Lufthansa’s brand differentiation, which is its passion for precision. That strategy will point to Lufthansa’s industry leading statistics for on-time arrivals and its policy of tasting wines at 30,000 feet - since wine flavour can change at high altitudes.
“Communications needs to have a use,” said Wayne Arnold, CEO Profero North America. “Saying we have passion for precision is fine, but it’s far more interesting if you can bring it to life.”
Lufthansa digital agency Profero in New York devised the tool which is available for any flight, not just Lufthansa. Widening the audience base not only makes this application more engaging for participants, however it adds a level of transparency that the airline is hoping to tie back into its marketing strategy.
“It comes back to open-source marketing,” said Arnold. “We believe this is a useful tool for anyone who is traveling. Why just make it exclusive to their own customers?”
Customers can chose whether they want only arrivals and departures updated or mid-flight messages as often as hourly with their position in the air. The real-time communication plays into the fascination of knowing what your friends are doing all the time and could soon be replacing your out-of-office automated messages.
