In a first-time effort to develop an interactive user-friendly live event of the famous talk show host and humanitarian Oprah Winfrey is joining forces with CNN.com and Facebook to present an Oprah’s Book Club interactive web event.
The special event, which is set to take place on Monday, November 9, 2009 at 9pm ET/6pm PT, will be streamed live and simultaneously from CNN.com’s video player on both Oprah.com and CNN.com and will make use of Facebook Connect to allow participants to interact while viewing the webcast.
The webcast will run for 90 minutes around the world, at which time participants will be able to submit questions to the author and may even be featured during the discussion. Facebook Connect will allow participants to comment through their personal profiles without ever having to leave the live webcast.
The book that is being showcased for this special event is the 63rd selection of Oprah’s Book Club, Say You’re One of Them. The collection is a compilation of five short stories that covers the plight of children in Africa. The author, Uwem Akpan tells each story from the perspective of a child.
Oprah’s Book Club is the largest book club in the world with nearly 2 million online members. It is free to become a member and gives participants access to online discussion groups and reading questions.
Aside from the live webcast CNN will be using iReport, its user-generated news community by encouraging participants who have already read the selected writing to share comments, photos or video submissions about what moved them as they read the text.
