CNN.com launched the newly revamped website this past Monday and has elevated the role of community content to a much more prominent position. The media organization’s citizen journalism news gathering, iReport has been made a regular section of the site.
iReport was established three years ago and has been important to CNN in terms of gathering a public perspective on breaking news and storytelling, especially as it is happening. Most notably iReport became a valuable source during the post-election unrest in Iran.
Newly named CNN iReport kicked off the launch with an unveiling hosted in New York City late last week. Producer Lila King feels that its placement is a natural fit. “I feel like we’re coming home. iReport is moving back into CNN.com where it belongs and we’re brining an incredible community of citizen journalists who’ve really done amazing work for the last three years,” said King in an interview with Beet.TV.
The placement of CNN iReport demonstrates its commitment to collaborating with its audience to deliver the most complete news coverage available. The new section will share the same design as the revamped site and will feature direct quotes from iReporters who are in the middle of unfolding stories around the world on its front page. Vetted iReports will also include clear labels and comments from CNN producers who add CNN context to the first-person view.
Aside from the newly integrated CNN iReport, CNN.com will also feature brand new design and showcase CNN Worldwide’s extensive video capabilities on its homepage. It will be ramping up some of its older sections for a fresh look and some new voices including its entertainment and opinion sections.
As well, CNN.com will be collaborating with TED Talks, Oprah.com and launching two new first-person mini-documentaries exclusive to the web.
“This is a total reimagining of CNN.com, and we are extremely excited about unveiling it to the world,” said KC Estenson, senior vice president and general manager of CNN.com. “CNN.com has always been a destination for breaking news but the breadth and depth of the new site will give users a fresh new way to experience CNN’s content.”
