Understanding the DNA of music

For anyone who has listened to Jason Derula’s new smash debut single, “Whatcha Say” and thought they have heard that song before - they have, well a portion of it at least. And now music fans don’t have to lose sleep trying to figure out where they have heard any song before, ever again.

Last year marked the launch of the UK based website Whosampled.com, a site that explores and discusses the DNA of music through 100 per cent user-generated content (UGC). The website has reached well over 10,000 songs uploaded, as well it boasts over 7500 artists including everything from Hip-Hop, Funk, Electronic music through Rock, Pop and beyond.

According to the website, “In music, sampling is the act of taking a portion, or sample, of one sound recording and reusing it as an instrument or element of a new recording. This is typically done with a sampler, which can be a piece of hardware or a computer program on a digital computer.”

Participants to the site must first register and then are welcome to submit a sample and cover artwork and then discuss samples within the Whosampled.com community of music lovers. All of the music uploaded to the site is closely moderated and has submission guidelines that must be followed by all members.

The site continues to grow daily and allows participants to watch video, comment on sampled music, learn more about the history and influences of their favourite songs and artists as well as discover new music. The website also features a blog and links to popular social networking sites for ongoing updates.

“The aim of the website is not only to be the most comprehensive, detailed and accurate database of samples and covers on the web but also a fun and engaging place to be at. This website is all about the discovery of new and old music, the exploration of musical influences and the sharing of knowledge.”
