ICUC Responds to Engadget Shutting Down Comments

Earlier this week tech site Engadget announced that they would be shutting down comments due to excessive trolling on its comments sections after extensive coverage of the release of Apple’s iPad.
The company, which regularly covers Apple has been criticized for being overly positive about its products. Bloggers are also speculating on whether Engadget’s comment feature shut down has anything to do with pressure from its advertisers.
Joshua Topolsky announced that the move had “zero business angle”, and was simply because they were sick of the personal attacks on community members and editors.
“I’m a big fan of the site, and the idea of killing the comments on the site frankly confuses me because there are solutions like ours,” said Keith Bilous, President and CEO of ICUC Moderation Services.
Engadget previously disabled commenting in 2005 under then editor Peter Rojas, for similar reasons. The company promised comments would be turned back on after things had cooled down, however many bloggers wonder how something like shutting down comments can affect what is meant to be a social community.
“I’d be happy to offer Engadget complimentary moderation services for their comments while the community cools down,” said Bilous.
