Google+ recently released a set of guidelines detailing how politicians, political organizations, governments, activists, and campaigners can properly and effectively use Google+ Brand Pages. The press release stipulated that Google wanted to increase their demographic by allowing political brands the opportunity to jump on board:
“By creating a Google+ Page for your public office or campaign, you and your staff can promote an issue, platform or cause, across the web”
The post, found here: http://www.google.com/+/learnmore/politics/, looks at five different ways that politicians and campaigns can use Google+ by sharing content, expressing support, tailor content through circles, host hangouts, or poll your supporters as a way to interact. This also allows you as an informed citizen to publicly support specific campaigns or campaign ideas across your social media landscape.
The announcement of Google+ for Politics comes at an interesting time, as the race for the Republican nomination is heating up, with the American presidential election is soon to follow. Popular French political party UMP, and main opposition Parti Socialiste have already created +Pages and are testing out the new interaction capabilities.
The announcement is another great opportunity for political brands to gain critical support, and interact on a face-to-face level with supporters and fans alike. The possibilities for Google+ Pages seem to be endless, already we’ve seen guideline pages released by Google for universities, sports/athletics, non profit organizations, and media outlets to create, connect and promote brand pages as a way to better interact in the social media world.
