ICUC and I have a few things in common. We’re both young – sort of, we’re both human powered, and we both call Winnipeg, Manitoba, home. I spent a week and a half of July in Manitoba seeing friends and family, and meeting with co-workers at our annual meeting.

The annual meeting covered topics such as marketing, finance, and sales with overviews of the last six months and forecasts and projections for what’s on the horizon for the remainder of 2010 and beyond. Like any company, it’s important we know where we are, where we were, and where we need to be. I think this is especially true for our company that works in a space evolving at the speed of conversation. (more…)

2010 marks the 10 year anniversary of the Gimli Film Festival in Gimli, Manitoba, Canada. In celebration, this year’s festival is hosting a My Gimli short film contest to apply the same qualities of fun and entertainment as the contests namesake, the pseudo-documentary by filmmaker Guy Maddin. The first time I went up the CN tower I took a picture of this welder painted on the wall beside the glass floor. It’s a ridiculous mural of a welder welding on what appears to be a 2X6 piece of lumber. This made me laugh but it also made me a little nervous. I sincerely hoped this wasn’t the sort of thing that was actually practiced during the construction of the tower.

This time in Toronto with my father I took a picture of him beside this welder. What makes this so special is that me and my father are both Journeyman welders, we both have our Inter-provincial Red Seals and my father actually teaches the apprenticeship program in Manitoba. This picture is one of those things that only guys like us would find funny, and for that reason I thought it was important enough to document here.

Let me know if you’ve seen this picture, I know thousands of people look at this painting every year and likely never notice this.

When you live in Manitoba you need to be creative when it comes to a pass time such as ice climbing. Because Southern Manitoba largely sits in the Red River Valley it is really flat. And not just flat like no mountains flat - more like watch-your-dog-run-away-for-three-days, flat. In this video I am “summiting” the highest ice wall in Manitoba - the 60’ man-made ice tower in St. Boniface, Winnipeg. My buddy Mark and I do a lot of rock climbing but this weekend was our first time with the ice and it was incredible. What are the chances of finding a real waterfall somewhere around Toronto to climb, does Niagara Falls ever freeze? Can I climb it? Is that a dumb question?

Also, for this I choose the awesome Flip supplied soundtrack titled Perfect Saturday - it just seemed fitting, and it made me laugh.
