Veoh victory good for UGC

Video hosting site Veoh won another legal victory during the holidays in a lawsuit over hosting uploaded copyrighted content.

According to Fred von Lohmann of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the victory over Universal Music Group should “put to rest the argument that transcoding and other activities necessary for making content accessible on the web are not covered by” DMCA safe harbour provisions for storing material on behalf of users. Legally speaking, user-generated content can be a liability for blog and website owners.

Although the laws covering user-generated content are as sparse as leaves on a tree in the middle of a Canadian winter, leading commercial copyright owners and services providing user-uploaded and user-generated audio and video content  have collaborated to establish principles that protect the rights of copyright owners.
